L’ex governatore di New York, George Pataki, è contrario alla costruzione della moschea, ed ha attaccato il governo municipale che blocca la ricostruzione della chiesa dedicata al patrono di Bari. Per la realizzazione della nuova struttura, l’amministrazione comunale di Bari, nel 2004, stanziò ben 258mila euro, ma da allora è tutto fermo. Ora, il sindaco di Bari, Michele Emiliano, all’epoca appena insediato, chiede che la questione si risolva, nel nome proprio di San Nicola. In caso contrario, si dovrà chiedere all’arcivescovo della Chiesa greco-ortodossa della Grande Mela la restituzione della somma versata sei anni fa. A parlare anche Potito Perruggini, presidente del Comitato per la ricostruzione della Chiesa di Saint Nicholas, che spera che il suo sogno possa finalmente avverarsi.
